Standardized Test Information & Preparation

Students should prepare for the ACT before taking it to maximize their score and minimize the number of times they need to take it. There are several things students can do to prepare:

  1. Practice Testing
Purchase a couple of practice books and sit for the test at home, with a similar time constraint (8 am, Saturday morning, 4 hours long). You will hate it, but it will allow you to feel how the time constraints affect you at that time of day. The practice testing will also allow you to become more familiar with the instructions and question styles, which will increase your reading speed on the day of the test. Time is consistently given as the number one issue on test day.
  2. The Real ACT Prep Guide
ACT has their own prep book with 5 practice tests. You can order it through their website, or a variety of other sites, such as Amazon. This is the best book to start out. Other books that are well known for effectiveness are Kaplan and Barron’s.
  3. Take A Kaplan Class
These are pricey, but they come with a guarantee of increasing scores and students that have taken advantage of it have benefited. They offer online courses or sessions in Columbus. The Kaplan website has lots of options to explore. They also host free practice testing in Columbus, but sign up early.
  4. Granville Rec Center
offers an ACT Turbo class taught by BWS Educational Consulting. BWS has classes in Columbus as well as tutors that will come out as far as Granville to meet with students individually. Again, it is pricey ($80/hour), but they have a great reputation.
